Study tour to Ashuganj Power Station Company Limited (APSCL)

January 30, 2018

14th of December 2017, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) of Green University of Bangladesh (GUB) organized a day-long Industrial Visit to the Ashuganj Power Station Company Limited (APSCL). The final year students had the opportunity to gather practical knowledge from the training officials and the Engineers regarding the geometrical structure of the plant, its construction and working procedure, the method of power generation, the safety and security measurements. Twenty three (23) students led by Professor Dr. Muhammad Fayyaz Khan, Pro Vice Chancellor, GUB and Professor. Dr. Md. Fayzur Rahman, Chairperson, Department of EEE participated in the tour. Besides, four (4) other faculty members of the Department of EEE , Dr. Md. Abdullah Al Humayun, Mr. Khan Rahmat Ullah, Mr. Md. Hasan Maruf  and Mr. Md. Shaheen Hawlader guided the students during the study tour. Ashuganj Power Station Company Limited (APSCL) is one of the major electricity generation plants in Bangladesh. It consists of nine (9) power generating units including private power plants. Its installed generation capacity is about 1876 MW; but it can generate 1627 MW. Two steam turbine units and one gas turbine unit are available now to form a combined cycle power plant. The tour consisted of three parts. At first, students visited the electrical control room and power generation unit. Then they observed the mechanical control room, boiler and turbine coupled with generator. At last, they observed the substation. At electrical control room the students observed many control panels, such as, control panels for 230kV, 132kV, 33kV and 11kV bus bars, switch gears, isolator control knobs, breaker operation knob, ammeter; voltmeter etc. Then the students visited the mechanical control room where they observed how the mechanical parameters like boiler’s flow rate, steam turbine is controlled. Then they observed the boiler, water treatment plant for the boiler, gas and steam turbines, alternators and other electrical and mechanical components of the power plant. The turbine is a steam turbine and has two pressure stages. One is high or medium pressure stage and the other is low pressure stage. At last, the students observed the sub-station that is consist of several electrical equipment like transformers, isolators, circuit breakers, wave-traps, GIS, HV cables, PTs, CTs, earthing and lightning systems and distribution transformers. The generation voltage is around 11-15kV, which is converted to 132kV or 230kV for transmission. There is 230 kV and 132kV supply lines to the national grid. More importantly there is a 400 kV transmission line is under construction. In this substation, three types of breakers, such as: SF6, oil and air circuit breakers, are available. The power plant has one 200MVA, 230/132 kV and one 1000MVA, 11/132 kV transformers. Like other power station, it also uses power line carrier to transmit signals for internal communication. It has 230kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS). It has also 11kV distribution transformers that are used for local power supply and internal consumption.
